“A major win for shareholders.”

That from Combined Building Supplies Co-operative spokesman, Ian Lamb, who says the recently signed agreement with Bunnings, which is worth many millions of dollars to the Co-op’s shareholders, gives CBS shareholders New Zealand-wide access to the equivalent of Group Home Buying rates.

“This gives our shareholders New Zealand-wide coverage with 55 stores from Whangarei to Dunedin and five new stores to come. These locations mean our member shareholders can be confident that when they are pricing projects in a location away from their usual business base, the price is consistent up and down the country”, says Mr Lamb. “We are extremely pleased to have Bunnings on board. They are a well-respected, well-run business and we look forward to a strong and long relationship with them.”

Des Bickerton, Bunnings Trade New Zealand Commercial Manager, says, “We’re excited to work with CBS to bring innovation to the market and we look forward to growing the relationship.  Bunnings New Zealand aims to increase annual sales revenue from $1.3 billion in the June 30, 2018 year to $2b by 2023, which will see new stores in regional and metropolitan areas and more than 1200 additional jobs”, Des says.

Ian Lamb emphasises that the growth Bunnings is planning, bodes well for CBS shareholders.

“As well as the increased access Bunnings offers CBS Co-op members to trade products and everything a full DIY store provides, it’s important for CBS to be working with suppliers who are strong and strategic in their business planning,” he says.

The Co-op is currently negotiating with a number of suppliers and Ian Lamb says other significant signings are not far away.

Q: Why did you establish the Combined Building Supplies Co-operative?

A co-operative is a proven, sustainable and successful model of business operation. It is used effectively in the plumbing and farming sectors.

In the residential construction sector, for example, most houses are built by small home building companies and yet they do not have the ‘buying’ power the larger companies do. CBS levels the playing field enabling small-medium construction companies to be competitive and improve their margins. It also enables others in related businesses / trades to be competitive as well.

Q: Why are suppliers prepared to offer these prices to CBS when the co-op is new with no purchasing volume history?

The suppliers with whom CBS has agreements recognise the value in the combined business from every shareholder who has already signed up with CBS. They can see the exciting potential of the co-operative and are well aware of how successfully other co-operatives work. (e.g. Farmlands co-op).

Q: Who can become a member?

Anyone in a construction sector related business or role, such as landscaping and architecture. There is no minimum or maximum size.

Q: What does it cost to become a member?

The shareholding investment is $1,000. There are no ongoing annual fees.

Q: How does the co-operative fund its operations?

As well as shareholders obtaining a better price when they purchase building materials or services, suppliers pay a rebate directly to the co-operative. This is used to cover operational and management expenses, with the surplus being distributed each year to member (shareholders) based on the size of business they have put through CBS suppliers.

Q: Do members have to buy from the suppliers who have signed up with CBS?

No. The co-operative’s purpose is to help shareholders obtain better prices, service, products – not to dictate which suppliers they can and can’t use.

We actively encourage members to consider using CBS’s suppliers because obviously the bigger the combined purchases, the better the pricing and more profit is returned to each member at the end of each year.
