The hugely popular Maeva Band successfully defended their National Title at Samoa’s premiere Teuila Festival.

This was a huge tribute to the band, who have been performing for only three years. In 2017 they entered the prestigious String Band championships for the first time – and they won. This year they have beaten off some very talented groups to win again.

They were clearly the favourite for the large crowd that watched the competition and they were supported on the night by a large group of Return to Paradise Resort guests and staff. Return to Paradise Resort is Samoa’s most renowned beachfront accommodation.

Maeva Band is made up of the gardeners from Return to Paradise. Three years ago, they started spontaneously singing Christmas carols as they put up the Resort’s Christmas trees. General Manager Ramona Su’a Pale was so impressed, she asked them to sing for the many Christmas dinners held at the Resort.

This went so well that she asked the band to perform every Saturday night in signature restaurant Paradise Kitchen. And then something remarkable happened – when the boys sang, the guests would stop talking to listen. They now perform a dinner show every Saturday night in Paradise Kitchen. “The show is often booked out,” says Ramona. “Our boys are developing quite a reputation; our guests and local visitors love the show.”

Recent visitor to the resort, Chris Paulsen Managing Director of the House of Travel Group was so impressed, he invited Maeva Band to perform at the International Travel Awards night in Wellington last March. “They are the best night’s Pacific entertainment I have ever enjoyed in 40 years in the travel industry,” said Mr. Paulsen.

The band brought back a huge trophy that was almost as tall as the band members which takes pride of place in the Resort. They were welcomed by the very proud family of staff and guests who all felt that they had a stake in their victory.

Return to Paradise Beach in Lefaga Samoa was named after the 1953 film starring Gary Cooper and Roberta Haynes. Samoans have regarded this beach as particularly special and it is nothing short of a spectacular beauty. It is located on Return to Paradise Beach, Matautu-Lefaga, Upolu, Samoa. The Maeva Band continues to perform in Paradise Kitchen Restaurant every Saturday night.
