Abel Tasman National Park
A little slice of kiwi paradise the Abel Tasman National Park in Nelson has no roads, so you'll need to either walk in from Marahau or arrive by water on one of the beaches along the Coastal Track. “The waters are calm and clear and the beaches are covered in golden sand,” says Emma Jarvie from Towelling It. The 53km Abel Tasman Coast Track is one of the Department of Conservation's Great Walks and can be walked in its entirety over three to five days.
Sumner, Christchurch
Christchurch's popular city beach is the perfect place to catch some summer while still being close to the inner city. Sumner beach is an ideal family beach with shallow water, but there are rip currents to be aware of and the beach is patrolled by lifeguards during the summer. “At low tide you can explore Cave Rock, or take a stroll along the wide promenade that stretches for 1.25km,” advises Emma.
Waiheke Island
A quick ferry ride from Auckland brings you to the gorgeous Waiheke Island. While golden beaches and emerald waters are Waiheke’s biggest drawcard, wine will have to be a close second. There are around 30 boutique wineries on island with many with tasting rooms, restaurants and stunning views.
Hot Water Beach
At the aptly name Hot Water Beach you will find hot water bubbling through the golden sand. “Dig your own hot pool metres from the Pacific Ocean at world-famous Hot Water Beach,” adds Emma. This a truly one of a kind Kiwi experience that every New Zealander should experience at least once in their lifetime!
Mt Maunganui
