The inaugural New Zealand’s First LGBTI awards team have launched a new video which encapsulates the celebration and positive atmosphere of the awards night in Auckland last month.
The awards brought together an array of local and international icons in the LGBTI community at the glitzy black-tie event which celebrated and recognised individuals, organisations and businesses that have contributed to the fight for equality and inclusion for the LGBTI community.
“The worse thing about being in the closet is that you feel that you are all on your own. The best thing about coming out is realising that you are not. That was certainly true for me,” says Sir Ian McKellen in his acceptance speech for the International Icon of the Year.
“I’d tried to be myself and speak up when it seems to be appropriate. We can all do that and when we do it together we have enormous power. So, thank you for this award,” added Sir Ian McKellen
Internationally-known actress and activist, Lucy Lawless, who was the New Zealand LGBTI Awards Ambassador had this to say about the awards “I’d never dream that I would be in anyway be important to the gay community, so thank you so much,”.
Hosted by Tamati Coffey, New Zealand’s most famous and well-loved comedy double act, the Topp Twins, was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award and just about $10,000 was raised for Youthline which was selected as the charity partner for New Zealand LGBTI Awards.

The awards will return to New Zealand next year in November 2019.
