Hamilton-based leading solar specialists A & A Solar and Electrical are passionate about powering homes and businesses in the Waikato using solar energy. The expert team can recommend and install the best solar panels for value by selecting from their extensive range of products.

“We firmly believe that solar energy should be the future of electricity across the globe,” says co-owner Andy Cooper. “Especially for New Zealand, it’s the ideal source of power since we receive so much sunlight all year round.”

Co-owners and directors of A & A Solar and Electrical Andy Cooper and Andy Mann outline six fascinating facts about solar energy:

  1. Solar energy is the cleanest source of power. Unlike fossil fuels, it is a renewable source of energy which does not produce any greenhouse gases that harm the environment.
  2. Although the Sun is a whopping 149.6 million kilometres away from the Earth, it takes less than 10 minutes for light to travel that distance. This means solar energy comes in abundance to our planet.
  3. Approximately 1,360 Watts per square metre of energy hits the top of the Earth’s atmosphere according to measurements made by NASA’ recent satellite missions.
  4. When sunlight strikes the thin layer of silicon on the top of a solar panel, it knocks electrons off the silicon atoms which creates an electric current that is captured by the wiring in a solar panel. Known as the “photovoltaic effect”, flowing electrons that have been knocked free by sunlight form electricity through solar panels.
  5. The five largest solar power plants in the world are: Noor Complex Solar Power Plant (Morocco), Kamuthi, Tamil Nadu (India), Longyangxia Dam Solar Park (China), Kurnool Ultra Mega Solar Park (India), and Shakti Sthala, Karnataka (India).
  6. Currently, solar power only makes up 0.2% of New Zealand’s total overall electricity generation but this energy source has gained massive popularity in recent years.
