Replenishing nutrition the right way is the key aspect of successful farming says Taupo-based fertiliser company Uptake.

Every smart farmer knows that they must replace nutrients in their soil that are taken away by the farming process. “Good nutrition is passed on from the soil, to the plants it grows into, to the animals the plants feed,” says John Davis, owner of Uptake and a veteran farmer of more than 40 years experience.

Some farmers have faith that an excess of granular urea is sufficient for healthy grass growth. However, looking at current research into New Zealand soil health has exposed there is an excessively massive amount of nitrogen and inadequate amounts of other elements, “This is ultimately both insufficient for soil, plant and animal health and harmful to the environment,” adds John.

A lot of hard-working Kiwi farmers are made to believe that laying on the nitrogen and phosphate thick and heavy will get the job done. However, this only results in a hefty chunk of their budget into purchasing these elements in large quantities, “which only benefits the large fertilizer companies as they empty from the pockets of the farmers in question,” adds John.

“I had a steak at a good restaurant the other day, it looked good, cooked perfectly, well presented, and it cost $38. Might as well have eaten my gumboot. Tough, no taste, horrible. That is the problem,” comments John.

John Davis says that a balance of essential elements, such as copper, zinc, selenium, sodium and others, is vital to sustaining an animal’s healthy diet, promoting strength and size and helping the animals fight off sickness and decreasing stress levels.

Replacing nutrition the right way will have benefits that will also eventually pass to the farmers themselves, and of course, to the consumers they supply.
