BAY OF PLENTY

For some, education is a job. For others, it’s a calling.

Sharl Fynn Wagner’s passion for her profession is evident. And now, she’s bringing that passion into the classroom as our new spa therapy tutor. Starting this month, we will be offering the New Zealand Certificate in Spa Therapy (Level 5) course for the first time.

Sharl trained as a Somatologist in South Africa and then worked on luxury cruise ships, before moving on to teaching.

“I’ve always loved travelling, which is what initially drew me to cruise ships, but I found my passion in teaching, connecting with the students and watching them grow more confident and passionate about their abilities and skills,” says Sharl.

Sharl spent 11 years teaching Somatology at Durban University of Technology before the travel bug bit again and she decided it was time for a new adventure in the 'land of the long white cloud'.

With more than a decade’s worth of hands-on experience as a tutor, as well as industry experience and a master’s degree in health promotion, Sharl brings a wealth of knowledge that she is excited to share with her students.

“For me, the focus will be on teaching students the importance of looking at wellness holistically – looking at the mind, body and soul.

“In teaching, we have this amazing opportunity to mould these passionate students to become the best at what they do. It’s so important then, that we not only teach them the technical skills, but also the importance of connecting and engaging with their community.”

“Rotorua is extremely rich in culture and a popular tourist destination. A lot of our students will also be coming in with international experience, and I believe that is such an amazing opportunity to encourage them to share their skills and experience with each other and eventually be able to offer an authentic, fully-rounded experience.”
