As we enter the second month of the New Year, now is a great time to make sure your pet is up to date with their health requirements. The friendly and professional team at Hamilton’s boarding kennels and cattery, Longtail Pet Motel have listed their top 5 reminders for keeping your pet healthy all year round.

Vaccinations
Make sure your pet vaccinations are up to date. Vaccinations play a vital role in building up your pet’s immunity and help to maintain good health by protecting them from infectious diseases that can be spread from one animal to another. Puppies and Kittens are particularly vulnerable to diseases while their immune systems are still developing. While some diseases only cause minor illness, others can be deadly. So, when it comes to a pet vaccination, prevention is better than cure.

Worming
Regular worming must be part of a regular health program otherwise the risks of contracting this potentially fatal disease are significantly increased. This is caused by foot-long worms (heartworms) that live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels which can cause severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body. Not only do these parasites affect the health of your pet, but they can also potentially infect humans with children being the most susceptible.

Microchipping
Rather than using tags and collars, Microchipping is another method of identifying pets which can’t be lost. Having your pet microchipped will remove the stress and distress of being unable to find your lost cat or dog. A microchip is permanent and will function for the life of your pet.

Fleas

Your pet’s warm, furry coat and sustaining blood supply are a flea's dream home. Fleas cause itching, scratching and in some severe cases anemia. Getting rid of fleas can be very time consuming so it is important to make sure it's never a problem by giving them a regular flea treatment.  It is vital to remember that it is far easier to avoid your pets from getting fleas than it is to remove the fleas from your pet and home.

Vet Check Up
When was the last time your pet had a routine check up at the vet? Having a regular veterinary check-up ensures that potential health problems are detected and treated early. Your pet should see your vet at least once a year and more frequently as they get older or if they have special medical needs.
