Running your own business offers you a great opportunity to give back to the local community by being a socially conscience business.  “Not only can this benefit your local community, it can make sense for your bottom line,” says Kelly Tutbury, Accountant and Managing Director at Tutbury & Associates Limited.

If you are open about being a socially conscious business, potential customers often choose to spend their money with businesses that share their values. “Being a socially conscience business will also help with making employees feel good about going to work, which will  lead to more enjoyable and more productive workplace. It can also help you hold onto good employees for longer too,” comments Kelly.

One way that businesses can give back to the community is to use a portion of their profits for good causes. But there are other ways to become a socially conscience business, these include:

  • Pay their workers a living wage, e.g. cleaners or warehouse staff.
  • Use sustainable energy, e.g. to power their premises or vehicles.
  • Use sustainable or recycled materials to make their products.

To highlight the vital role socially conscious businesses play, the Government has set up the Impact Initiative. This initiative allows businesses opportunity to engage with the Social Enterprise Sector Development Programme, a three-year programme commissioned to grow social enterprise in Aotearoa New Zealand.

If you want to take first steps to become a socially conscience business ask yourself “does your company make a positive difference to your community or the planet? If not, can you team up with other organisations who do?,” advises Kelly.

Tutbury & Associates Limited are no strangers to this idea, recently they support of children’s charity KidsCan through Social Giving. KidsCan gives Kiwi kids in need with food, clothing and health items at school, so when they get into the classroom, they are best possible position to learn
