With winter fast approaching and temperatures dropping, many of us are thinking about ways to prepare our house to keep it warm all winter long. Here are five quick tips for preparing your home for winter from Hamilton’s leading solar and heat pump specialists, A&A Solar and Electrical.

Utilise Your Curtains
Heat from the sun is free so you might as well make the most of it. During the day make sure you open your curtains to let that sunlight in and then draw the curtains at dusk to keep the day's heat in as this acts as another layer of insulation and keeps the warmth in your home.

Stop Cold Air
Prevent chilly draughts by making sure your windows and doors fit their frames. On windows make sure hinges, catches and latches are tight. Try adding self-adhesive rubber seals around doors and windows and door draught excluders. These are moderately cheap and easy to install. “It’s worth getting those doors and windows sealed before winter cold properly sets in,” adds Andy Cooper who owns A&A Solar and Electrical alongside Andy Mann.

Open Windows
This may seem counterintuitive but try to open your windows for at least a few minutes each day. This will aid in keeping your home dry which in turn makes your home easier to heat and decreases the cost of heating.

Reduce Condensation

When you cook or take showers make sure that you wipe off any water that has collected on walls and on the inside of windows. It is important to do this as condensation makes your rooms feel damp and dampness can cause mould to grow. “if you have an extractor fan this is a good time to use it,” advises Andy.

Reposition Furniture
Strategically place your room’s furniture to avoid cold air from windows and that can enjoy the benefits warm sun. Also move your sofa and other larger pieces of furniture away from your heating sources or radiators so the heat can flow freely in a room.
