A Unicef-led effort to bring clean water to the ravaged Vanuatu region of Panama is being made a reality thanks to “Water For All”, a Social Giving project founded and funded by leading industrial equipment and solutions company Atlas Copco New Zealand.

Yuri Reijmer, Managing Director at Atlas Copco New Zealand, says that access to a steady supply of clean water saves lives and empowers millions of people.

One of the project’s more large-scale endeavours, the Vanuatu Project aims to bring clean water, toilets and hand washing facilities to every school in Panama, from pre-school to high school.

“In the remote Panama province of Vanuatu, children urgently need better facilities at school. Not only to improve their education, but also for their basic health,” Yuri says.

“Panama was badly affected by Cyclone Pam in 2015, and more recently by the Ambae volcano. Most schools have no clean running water, and toilets and hand washing facilities are basic or non-existent.”

“That's 10,000 children whose lives will be changing,” Yuri says.

Donations to the project can be made on the Unicef website, which offers the opportunity to become a Project Champion via a monthly donation.

The Mulanje District in Malawi, a particularly large-scale project bringing clean water to over 2,800 households, and the Jaloot project in Maharashtra, India, which aims to reduce the region’s dependency on monsoon rains by facilitating new water supplies for agriculture and drinking, are just two other recent projects aided by the funding from “Water For All”.

The dedication and passion of the projects volunteers continues to pay off, with millions of people all over the world given access to clean drinking water, sanitation and a better quality of life since Atlas Copco’s creation of the project in 1984.

The project is run by volunteers within the Atlas Copco group, and is entirely non-profit, with 100% of all donations going to expert non-government organisations and local staff in the project country.
