The Auckland International Rugby Academy has specialised rugby training for high school students looking to improve their game.  The Academy works out of Eden Park and has high school rugby experience that includes five strength and conditioning sessions per week, four technical and tactical rugby sessions, one analysis session, one mental skills session and one Kapa Haka session.

The technical skills session also covers attack and defensive game and core skills. The high school rugby experience is over one to two weeks. It covers the player’s nutrition, strength and conditioning and medical support. ESOL assistance is available for speakers of other languages. This experience allows them to train alongside elite and professional players, and even get a chance to get a club placement. The Academy can also arrange homestay accommodation that includes meals.

Formed in 1883 the Auckland Rugby Union has a long history of success, winning provincial championships.  They have produced more All Blacks than any other province. Since 2015 the Auckland International Rugby Academy has been creating similar opportunities for players around the world.

The Academy members are assessed on arrival in order to customise training programmes that meet their level and objectives. At the end of the coaching experience they are given a report outlining their progress and further areas for improvement. The Academy is committed to creating the best high performance pathways and programmes to support athletes in achieving their aspiration.

Auckland Rugby has made consistent efforts to improve participation pathaways for high school students. With an increase of 17% from 2016-18, Female Rugby is in high demand across participation and high-performance pathways which Auckland Rugby has already addressed with the appointment of former Black Ferns Anna Richards in the role of Female High-Performance Manager.

In an exciting innovation, the 1R competition is now the pinnacle of weight-restricted rugby at Secondary School level providing a further opportunity and pathway for players to experience the high of a premier grade at Secondary School level. The 1R as an additional pathway to complement what already exists in the open-weight options at Secondary School level.
