Just a few kilometres north of Taupō is the small settlement of Wairakei - a geothermal hot spot and home to the Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary. This made it a predator-free crèche for vulnerable bird species and since then, the area of the golf course has become a safe lodging for kiwi and takahē chicks and other bird life such as the native tui, bellbird and quail. A herd of small fallow deer and a stag were also introduced in a separate fenced off area and have been hand-reared so that they are comfortable with human contact. With 25,000 native trees and five thousand exotic species planted within the sanctuary, the Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary makes for a picturesque and peaceful atmosphere that can be enjoyed by golfers and wildlife alike.
