Just a few kilometres north of Taupō is the small settlement of Wairakei - a geothermal hot spot and home to the Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary. Voted New Zealand’s Number 1 Golf Course, the Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary truly lives up to its name as it boasts an idyllic environment where golf and the natural habitat work in harmony. Prompted by golf course owner, Gary Lane the course underwent an ecological restoration several years ago to create a wildlife sanctuary and to improve the atmosphere of the park like surroundings. It was the first of its kind in New Zealand and quite possibly the first in the world to do this.
Restoration of the Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary commenced in 2009, in which a 2 metre tall fence was positioned around the entire course perimeter to keep out predators such as rats, mice, stoats and weasels. This made it a predator-free crèche for vulnerable bird species and since then, the area of the golf course has become a safe lodging for kiwi and takahē chicks and other bird life such as the native tui, bellbird and quail. A herd of small fallow deer and a stag were also introduced in a separate fenced off area and have been hand-reared so that they are comfortable with human contact. With 25,000 native trees and five thousand exotic species planted within the sanctuary, the Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary makes for a picturesque and peaceful atmosphere that can be enjoyed by golfers and wildlife alike.
Situated just 13 minutes’ drive from the Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary, is The Flying Trout Boutique Lodge which hosts three exquisite luxury suites that can accommodate up to six guests at any time. Continental and fully cooked breakfasts are included and all rooms provide the ultimate in comfort with 1,000 thread count linen on plush King sized beds. With stunning views of Lake Taupō and the surrounding mountains, The Flying Trout is just as much a sanctuary as the Wairakei Golf Course + Sanctuary and its close location to the course makes it the perfect place for golfers to go back to after a memorable day on the green.
