Just 3-5 minutes’ drive from the award-winning accommodation Argent Motor Lodge in Hamilton, a set of interactive light sculptures has taken over Garden Place in a remarkable display of art and creativity. Garden Place, an open space within the Hamilton CBD that hosts a plethora of events and activities throughout the year, has recently been revamped with a few painted art pieces created by the Boon Street Art Festival. However, this latest instalment of sculptured artwork brings something new and innovative to Hamilton City.
Positioned on the grassy expanse of Garden Place, the four intricately detailed geometric sculptures have been given the name ‘Boon After Dark’ and were introduced to Hamilton City last Saturday 3rd August 2019 in a launch event. Commencing at 5.30pm, the event was free for the public to attend and included speeches by those involved in the creation of the project as well as Hamilton Mayor, Andrew King. The sculptures were then lit up at 6pm for the first time within Hamilton City, astonishing onlookers with a beautiful array of light and colour and transforming Garden Place into an outdoor art exhibition.
With the aim of allowing people to engage with art in their everyday lives, ‘Boon After Dark’ was invented by artists Yelena Filipchuk and Serge Beaulieu and explores “the very nature of light, shadow and perception” (stuff.co.nz). Inspired by the intersection of light, material, technology, science and mathematics, the sculptures create a sense of intrigue and wonderment that takes away from the ordinary and mundane. Temporarily installed at Garden Place until November 30th 2019, they will definitely add an aspect of beauty to the ordinary lives of passers-by.
