Two men assault Sergent and steal patrol car

At 8.20pm a Highway Sergent was pursing a vehicle in Albert Rd, New Plymouth that failed to stop.

The vehicle a Toyota Corona took off at speed and after a short pursuit it left the road and crashed.

The driver and one passenger left the scene but returned shortly after, assaulting the 60year old Sergeant and stealing his patrol car.

The stolen patrol car was spiked after a short distance and the two offenders were both arrested.
 
The driver a 25year old male from Waikanae will appear in the New Plymouth District Court on assault charges. 

The Sergeant has been taken to hospital suffering from concussion and bruising.
