“Being a chef is not just a job, it’s a passion,” says Lewin Leo Lophus (pictured), Head Chef at Hamilton’s leading café, Momento City Café.
Lewin’s love of food began at an early age. “I loved cooking since my childhood. I helped Mum in the kitchen and later started admiring the cooking shows on television. The most important thing I learnt was from my grandmother. She taught me that food is the way to heart and the soul,” comments Lewin.
With a BSc degree in hotel management and wealth of experience under his belt, Lewin has been a chef for the last 16 years. “I started my journey as a chef by working with Taj group of 5-star hotels, I then moved to Middle East Kuwait and was the Chef/Manager and then became operational manager for the chain,” says Lewin.
Lewin then moved again to India where he worked as a head chef for a Greek restaurant. “I also helped to design, train and manage a kitchen for a brand-new hotel,” adds Lewin.
On the move again, Lewin then re-located to New Zealand to work for the Momento Group for the last eight years. “With the Momento Group I got the opportunity to specialise in different cuisines like Italian, Japanese, French and Mexican,” comments Lewin.
Serving up fresh coffee and yummy food along with a brand-new menu, you will be spoilt for choice at Momento City Café. “Every dish is made to satisfy and make the customer happy,” adds Lewin. Among his favourite foods to cook with is anything with newly caught seafood and freshly grown vegetables.
