Learning dispositions are characteristics or attitudes to learning that are life skills, and are closely aligned with primary school key competencies. “Taking responsibility”, “persistence” when faced with problems, and “coping with change”, are all learning dispositions or ways children respond to learning.

Dispositions are combinations of children’s emerging knowledge, skills and attitudes to learning. Positive dispositions for learning include courage and curiosity, trust and playfulness, perseverance, confidence and responsibility.

Dispositions for learning also include the way children approach learning, for example, taking an interest, being involved, persisting with difficulty, challenge and uncertainty, and expressing a point of view, and these dispositions are noticed, recognised and responded to by competent educators in early childhood settings.

You will also notice these dispositions at home. Through sharing your observations and knowledge with the early childhood service a broader perspective of your child’s interests and abilities will emerge. Early childhood “learning dispositions” are used to understand children’s ability to be self motivated and be lifelong learners in a changing world. Learning dispositions are characteristics or attitudes to learning that are life skills. They are closely aligned with primary school key competencies.

The learning outcomes and the dispositional basis at Te Atatu South Childcare encourage teachers to ensure that they are focused on ensuring that children develop lifelong skills that promote future learning, which is relevant and based on each child’s individual progress and interests. Rather than taking a structured ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to learning, teachers are encouraged to view the child as an individual and to consider influences on each child’s life and learning; this approach ensures that learning promotes further learning.

At Te Atatu South Childcare Centre they believe that, through everyday experiences, the tamariki will develop social competencies which will support them in future learning success. They value that the early years are a crucial period for this to evolve, so for more information on childcare Auckland, transition to school and early childhood centres please go to www.teatatusouthchildcare.co.nz .
