Merito Coffee, the Auckland-based coffee roaster, has released a statement on the health benefits of caffeine. Even though coffee has long been recognised as a source of antioxidants, many consumers still have concerns over caffeine. It’s commonly associated with heart disease, but according to recent studies that may not be the case.

Recently, the British Medical Journal has published a analysis that compiles the findings of 201 other studies on caffeine and it’s affect on health. The study found that according to the data, the risks of consuming caffeinated coffee are minor when compared to the health benefits.

Some of these benefits include reducing risks of mouth and throat cancer by up to 50%, reducing chances of stroke by up to 22%, and reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

The study also found that those who drink caffeinated coffee regularly are actually less likely to got to hospital due to a heart rhythm disturbance.

Tea was also included in the study, which found tea drinkers have a lower blood pressure average than most people. Coffee drinkers were just behind tea drinkers, and we can assume this is because there is slightly less caffeine in coffee than there is in black tea.

All of these results came from tests which indicated that the best results came from a diet that included regular coffee in moderation—those drinking several cups a day may find the health benefits are not as pronounced.

The studies also suggested that consuming caffeine though natural products, like coffee, is ideal. This is because a large portion of coffees health benefits come from its natural antioxidants, not directly from the caffeine alone. The benefits of these antioxidants outweigh any risks associated with caffeine, especially regarding heart health.
