The versatility, resilience and economical nature of the air compressors suppled by world leaders in industrial products and solutions Atlas Copco make them an essential piece of equipment for businesses across a wide range of industries.

As experts in the industrial field, with decades of experience in countries all over the world, Atlas Copco can provide concise, detailed information about what clients should be looking for when purchasing an air compressor for their business.

“One of the biggest challenges is to correctly size your new air compressor. Similarly to everything else, new compressors available on the market are more efficient and employ better technology, therefore you have to understand the application and usage to size the machine correctly,” says Yuri Reijmer, Managing Director at Atlas Copco New Zealand.

“Choosing the wrong air compressor for your facility can lead to problems with production and/or increased costs, due to wasted energy.”

Pressure is the next important factor to consider. Simply put, the higher the psi (pounds per square inch) or “bar” refers to the force the compressor provides. A higher pressure is generally needed for larger applications, but also ups the power consumption needs of the equipment.

Finally, there’s flow, or “free air delivery”, which refers to the compressor’s ability to perform a task within a specified amount of time. Flow can be raised or lowered depending on the client’s needs, thanks to the versatility of Atlas Copco’s equipment, and is measured in cubic feet per limit (cfm) or litres per second (l/s).

“If the flow is insufficient, the process will require frequent breaks while the compressor builds up pressure in the reserve tank, therefore indicating that the compressor might be undersized,” Yuri says.

“Ultimately, when you are looking to supply enough compressed air for a given application, it is important to consider the amount of compressed air flow (CFM) needed at a specific pressure (PSI) required for the process to work properly.”

While these are crucial factors to consider when obtaining an air compressor, Atlas Copco has the range and know-how to ensure their clients receive the correct guidance, and come away with the right equipment for their business – every time.
