WILD MOA MULTISPORT EVENT AND OFF-ROAD TRIATHLON

12th JANUARY 2008,  Rotorua

The 6th annual Wild Moa multisport race will for the first time introduce a 1km swim option for those that prefer to be in the water than on top of it! They will then complete the same stunning 30km mountain bike ride and 15km trail run that has made the course a favourite amongst multisporters for the last 5 years. Keen kayakers will still paddle the original course from Lake Okataina to Lake Tarawera via the unique bush track portage.

Run 4km, Kayak 7km, Portage 1km, Kayak 9km, Mtb 32km, Run 15km.
OR
Swim 1km, Mtb 32km, Run 15km

The cycle leg starts with 5km of sealed road before going to gravel forestry roads interspersed with single track.
Connoisseurs of Rotorua’s fine mountain bike park will recognise the tracks ridden on the cycle leg: Pondy Downhill, Pondy New, Rollercoaster, Spring Roll, Sweet and Sour, Be Rude Not To, Creek Track, The Dipper, and Rock Drop- some of the smoothest and most flowing single track in the world famous Whakarewarewa mountain bike park. Perfect for the novice mountain bike rider and great fun for the experienced!

The 15km trail run to the finish is a loop from the majestic Redwoods, through the Moa Valley, up Heart Attack hill, and finally around the beautiful visitor centre tracks.

With both of last years individual winners planning to defend their Moa multisport titles, the interest is more in their winning margins, such was their dominance in the 2007 race. Stu Lynch had a 13 minute margin over his good mate Brent Edwards, whilst Anna Berthelsen held a comfortable 28 minutes after her 5 hours 26 effort. Can anyone get closer in 2008?!

Similarly in the relay section the Fenn Kayaks team of Oscar Stielau, Paul Bishop, and Colin Earwaker haven’t been beaten in four years, though several teams have run them close!
In the Wild Moa Off-Road Triathlon, the big name is New Zealand Xterra and Mountain Bike representative, Mark 'Cabin' Leishman who will look to christen the inaugural Wild Moa Triathlon with a good fast record for others to beat in future years!

With the spread in times ranging from around 4:30 – 9 hours for the multisport event and a predicted 2:50 – 6 hours for the triathlon, the event caters for all abilities. If you’re new to off-road triathlon the Wild Moa is the perfect event. In fact, we think it’s the best off-road tri course in Rotorua!
