Stratford District residents can pay tribute to Sir Edmund Hillary in a condolence book at the council building on Miranda Street, Stratford.

Mayor John Edwards says, “Sir Edmund was an inspiration to everyone, and typifies the spirit of a true New Zealander. Sir Edmund was a very humble person, and achieving the fantastic feats that he did in his lifetime never changed the humility of the man. He was Sir Ed to everyone. His work in Nepal for the Sherpa people is something that from this side of the world we can only begin to admire, for it has been ongoing for more than 40 years.

I would like to invite any community member who wishes to sign the book to do so at the council building foyer.”

The book has already been signed by Mayor John Edwards, several members of the staff and the public.

The condolence book will be in the foyer of the council building until Friday 25 January for the public to write messages of support and tribute for Sir Ed. It will then be presented to Lady Hillary and family.
