The first Stratford Town Board was formed in 1882. The Stratford County Council was formed in 1890. The Stratford Borough Council was formed on 22 July 1898. The Stratford District Council was first formed on 1 April 1989 from a merger between the former Stratford Borough Council and former Stratford County Council and reconstituted on 1 November 1989 as part of the nation-wide "revolution" in Local Government. The Stratford District Council is one of three in the Taranaki region, the other two being the New Plymouth District Council and the South Taranaki District Council.
