Bungy or Bungee? Here’s the Difference

Ever wondered why some people spell it “bungy” while others use “bungee”?

They’re actually the same activity. “Bungee” is the more common spelling worldwide, while “bungy” is the New Zealand spelling used by AJ Hackett.

The modern sport began with a 1979 jump from Bristol’s Clifton Suspension Bridge, before AJ Hackett helped turn bungy jumping into a commercial adventure experience. In 1988, AJ Hackett and Henry van Asch opened the world’s first permanent commercial bungy site at Kawarau Bridge in Queenstown.

Today, both spellings refer to the same adrenaline-filled activity. Whether you search for bungy jumping or bungee jumping, you’ll find the same experience: a jumper, an elastic cord and a very long drop.
