Loose window covering cords remain a hidden hazard in homes across New Zealand. As families childproof living spaces or prepare nurseries, window coverings are frequently overlooked, despite Product Safety New Zealand warnings regarding the strangulation and entanglement risks posed by accessible cords.

A cord out of reach from floor level can quickly become accessible when furniture such as cots, beds, sofas, or toy boxes are placed beneath windows. Curious pets are also at risk. SPCA New Zealand notes that cats and dogs can easily become tangled in hanging cords or chew on loose operating mechanisms.

To reduce these hazards, safety guidelines recommend choosing cordless blinds or motorised window coverings where possible. Cordless roller blinds, cellular blinds, and motorised treatments eliminate hanging operating cords altogether, combining safety with insulation and light control.

For homes with existing corded blinds, retrofitting cord tension devices securely to the wall or window frame can help keep cords taut and away from children. However, older blinds with damaged cords, missing safety parts, or difficult mechanisms should be assessed by a professional or replaced.
