Northbound traffic will begin using the new Taradale off-ramp at the State Highway 50 Meeanee Road / Hawke’s Bay Expressway intersection on Wednesday.

The off-ramp replaces the free turn left at Meeanee Road.

Transit New Zealand is asking motorists to be patient and take extra care as people adjust to the new layout.

Transit regional manager Hilton Netterville says the opening of the off-ramp marks the first major step towards completion of the Meeanee Road Interchange project, and is expected to ease congestion and improve safety at the intersection.

“We’re very pleased with the progress made to date, and the advance opening of the northbound off-ramp is a very significant step in the construction of the Meeanee Road Interchange,” says Mr Netterville.

A speed restriction of 30 km/h on the new off-ramp will be in place until concrete barriers are installed alongside the off-ramp.

“Construction will continue on the new interchange layout over the next eight months but will not impact significantly on traffic at the intersection,” says Mr Netterville.

Stage 2 of the Meeanee Interchange is now underway and will complete this project, which is designed to resolve recurring congestion and safety issues where Meeanee Road meets the Expressway. Once complete, Meeanee Interchange will carry expressway traffic over Meeanee Road and result in substantial time-savings for motorists.

The two-lane overbridge, which is being constructed concurrently with Stage 2 of the project, is already well underway and is scheduled for completion before Labour Weekend,

The project is on track to be completed in December, on time and within budget.
