Refurbishment at the Todd Energy Aquatic Centre will see the indoor pools temporarily closed to the public from the middle of next week.

The indoor pools will close at the end of the day on Wednesday 6 February (Waitangi Day), and will reopen by late March.

“We want to give people the chance to swim in the indoor pools on Waitangi Day before we have to close them to make way for the construction work,” says Acting Manager Aquatic Recreation Operations Blair Haase.

“When the refurbishment is finished, aquatic centre users will see a much brighter interior with great new features – I’m looking forward to seeing the reaction of customers when we can open the doors again.”

Construction has already begun on the tower for the new double hydroslide which customers will be able to enter and exit from within the aquatic centre building. It is anticipated that the hydroslides will be operational a few weeks after the indoor pools reopen.

While construction takes place indoors, the outdoor pools will remain open.

“All of the aquatic centre’s regular programmes will continue in the outdoor pool, and the reception, family changing rooms and gym will also operate unchanged,” says Mr Haase.

“We’re keeping it business as usual as much as possible during the construction period, however pool space will be at a premium on weekday afternoons and after school so customers should be prepared to share lane and pool space with more people than they normally would.”

When the outdoor pools close for the season, refurbishment of the public changing rooms will take place along with works in the outdoor pool area – including the removal of the old hydroslides. The entire project will be completed by Labour Weekend.
