Central Otago to Become a Film Friendly District
Central Otago District Council supported the recommendation to apply for Film Friendly status at its District Development Committee meeting today.
Film Friendly is a joint initiative between Film NZ and Local Government NZ and recognises that a local authority has the necessary systems in place to meet screen production industry needs as they arise. This includes the internal coordination of approaches from the film industry to ensure that any queries are handled as efficiently as possible.
Film is a significant industry in Otago and Southland, with New Zealand’s third largest production sector based out of Queenstown and Dunedin being the base for Natural History New Zealand, the world’s second largest producer of wildlife documentaries.
A desire to work cooperatively within the region should see more film crews heading into Central Otago.
Central Otago District Council is making a commitment to support this growing industry. While this includes such things as ensuring that film activity complies with any regulations, it also extends to putting the film makers in touch with the right people and businesses in Central Otago and even, if needed, assist with
accommodation or logistics needs.
Business Development Manager, Jonathan Gadd, says “Film activity has the potential to bring a lot of benefit to Central Otago. Films such as “Lord of the Rings” have shown the world what our district can offer in terms of scenery. However, we are also very keen to be known as a great place for film crews to come and work.
We want this to be a positive place for everyone – if this happens then local businesses will also gain. Film Friendly is a signal that we are here to help.”
