KAITAIA

Repossession

Ngati Kahu marched through Kaitaia on Friday in support of their repossession of Rangiputa. Landcorp holds the land on behalf of the Crown. Ngati Kahu have been negotiating for ten years to get it back. The Crown has not only stalled the claims process, they are now selling the land under claim.

I congratulate those who have moved back onto the whenua, I am happy to take their case to the House, and I stand with them in their fight to get back land which has huge cultural significance to Maori throughout the country.

I see the people of Hauraki have repossessed their lands too. Time the government came to the party, and stopped playing stupid buggers.

Smacking sux

Sue Bradford’s bill to ban the smacking of children, came up last week. It was a conscience vote, and I got heaps of emails telling me not to, but I voted for it. There’s a lovely little song every Kohanga child, parent, and grandparent knows and it goes like this:

“Ko te taonga o töku ngäkau, ko täku mokopuna e, he mokopuna korikori, hei aha hei aha ra. Ko te mea nui ko te aroha, kaua e patu täku mokopuna. Me awhiawhi mai täku mokopuna korikori e”

“The treasure of my heart is my darling little grandchild. Playful and mischievous, but never mind; the biggest thing is my love for them, so please don’t hit them - give them a cuddle instead”

Kapa haka rox

Me and my mokopuna went down to the Matatini on the weekend. Awesome. Excellent venue, beautiful weather, friendly crowds, heaps of stalls, plenty kai, and the best kapahaka in the country.

John Key asked me what I thought of it, and I said, “I love it. It gives me energy. It gives me pride. It’s a celebration of Maori excellence. Your mates should come and see what it is that makes Maoridom rock.”

I was really proud of the Tai Tokerau groups – Timatanga and Hatea, and proud too of those from Tai Tokerau in other groups as well. If I have one wish for the future, it’s that we get more Tai Tokerau groups pushing one another, so that one of us makes the Top Six in 2009.
