Cafe explosion spreads debris accros street
Police closed a section of Cook Street in Howick this morning as Fire Service fought and extinguished a large fire in a restaurant.
The Northern Communications Centre received a number of 111 calls reporting an explosion at the Café Hasan Baba just after 3.00 am.
Furniture and debris from the premises was strewn across the road and into the cemetery opposite.
A pedestrian who was passing and approximately five metres from the Café when the explosion occurred, was checked at the scene by ambulance staff but was not injured.
Fire safety officers remain at the scene investigating the cause of the explosion and fire.
