The launch of a new web-based directory to help promote New Zealand and Australia's biotechnology industries to a global market has been announced.

Economic Development Minister Trevor Mallard has announced the launch of a new web-based directory to help promote New Zealand and Australia's biotechnology industries to a global market.

An initiative of the Australian-New Zealand Biotech Alliance (ANZBA) in partnership with Invest Australia, the directory will help global companies access local pharmaceutical and biotechnology organisations.

Welcoming the directory at an Australia-New Zealand networking event at BIO 2007 in Boston, Trevor Mallard said it would ensure a broader knowledge of the region's biotech capabilities.

"Together Australia and New Zealand represent the world's fifth largest biotech hub, and both offer a competitive location for conducting clinical trials and world-leading research," says Trevor Mallard.

"Recent figures show the region provides two per cent of global medical research publication output, and three per cent of world pharmaceutical sales. The directory will support the hard work being done by our companies to increase this."

Trevor Mallard is in Boston to attend the BIO 2007 event, the world's largest meeting of biotech organisations, media and investors. Yesterday he also took part in one of the 'BIO super sessions', presenting at the international seminar.

"New Zealand is increasingly connected to the global biotech community - 75 per cent of partnerships formed in 2004 and 2005 were formed with international partners," Trevor Mallard said.

"For biotech to continue its positive contribution to New Zealand's transformation into a high wage, innovative and export-led economy, it's vital that we continue this trend and attract international attention."
