Voting is about to get underway in the by-elections to fill a vacancy on the Maniototo
Community Board and the Alexandra Ward of the Vincent Community Board.

Voting papers will be posted to those on the respective electoral rolls from 13th until
18th March and should be returned by either posting or delivering them to the Council
offices by noon on 4 April. Preliminary results should be known by mid-afternoon.
Five candidates are standing for the Alexandra Ward: Michael Colligan, Trevor
Goudie, Shaun McLellan, Richard Prosser and Barrie Wills.

Three candidates are standing for the Maniototo Ward: George Dundass, David
McAtamney, Mike Summers.

The by-elections are to fill the vacancy in both Community Boards due to insufficient
nominations in the 2007 local body elections. These elections are held under the
First Past the Post electoral system where voters tick only the person for whom they
wish to vote.

Central Otago District Council Electoral Officer David Cummings says that voting
papers should be dealt with as soon as they are received, rather than putting aside
until later. "And if you don't happen to get one for some reason please let me know."
Postal Centres are based at Alexandra, Naseby and Oturehua and at the Maniototo
Community Library.

Anyone who needs to make a special vote can do so going to the Council offices at
Alexandra and Ranfurly during normal business hours (Monday to Friday) from 13
March until noon on 4 April. For those people who are unsure whether they are on
the roll can check at Council Offices at Alexandra and Ranfurly,
