Traffic on State Highway 71 (Lineside Rd) between Southbrook and the Christchurch Northern has been disrupted for much of the day following the spillage of milk fat along the entire length of highway.

This resulted in the road surface becoming slippery, causing several minor crashes.

The eastbound lane was closed to all traffic for several hours as contractors spread grit in an effort to reduce risk to motorists.

Although the highway is now open, motorists are urged to exercise extreme care and common sense as heavy commuter traffic uses the road this evening and tomorrow morning.

A temporary 50 km/h speed restriction is in place for all traffic.

This will be reviewed by Transit tomorrow morning.
