North Road at Clevedon is likely to be closed for some considerable time as police and emergency services deal with a crash involving multiple fatalities.

A head-on impact between a 4WD vehicle and a car at 12.30pm, approximately 3kms north of Clevedon, has so far resulted in four confirmed deaths with at least two more people sustaining serious injuries.

Damage to the car is such that the number of people inside cannot yet be confirmed.

North Road has been closed to traffic at Twilight Road, in Clevedon itself, and at the turnoff from Maraetai Coast Road at the northern end.

A patrol is stationed at the Duder's Reserve turnoff to direct traffic leaving the beach northwards.

It is not possible at this stage to give an estimated time of opening the road.
