The Police Northern Communication Centre reports that main routes throughout the region, from Turangi, north are busy.

State Highways 2 & 26 around Paeroa are reported to be the busiest seen in years with traffic reduced to a crawl in several places.

All Auckland motorways are reported to be busy and SH1, north through Orewa and Waiwera is congested to the extent that some motorists are giving up and turning around.

The SH16 alternative is steady and the recommended route.

Considering the number of vehicles on the road, most motorists appear to be driving to the conditions.

Hopefully this will continue as any crash will have a major impact on other travellers.

Those travelling are advised to allow for delays and asked to be patient.
