The Turangi Community Board today agreed to remove the Exeloo public toilet on Waipapa Reserve.

The toilet, which was installed in 1997, has suffered from ongoing vandalism and is in need of complete refurbishment which has been estimated to cost almost $33,000.

Community Board Chairman Cr Don Ormsby queried whether it was the responsibility of Turangi ratepayers to provide a public facility for passing traffic rather than visitors to the town.

Board member Terry O’Brien agreed, “It’s a huge cost to the ratepayers who get nothing out of it,” he said.

The Board members agreed unanimously that the toilet should be removed because of the high costs required to maintain it and repair damage caused by vandals.

Taupo District Council will investigate options for replacing the toilet. A proposed recommendation, including estimates of both capital and ongoing costs, will then be presented to the public for feedback as part of the Council’s ten-year plan it is preparing later this year.
