Road closed due to slips

 Police are advising motorists to avoid non-essential travel along State Highway 2 north of Napier (between Napier and Gisborne).

Extremely bad weather has caused significant slips along the road, which has resulted in a stretch of the highway near the Matahorua Bridge being closed to traffic.

Diversions are in place along Matahorua Road near Tutira, to North of the Matahorua Bridge.
 
This diversion will add significant travel time for motorists due to a significant stretch of the road being unsealed.

The road closure is expected to be in place for several hours and Police are advising motorists from travelling this route if at all possible.
