Taupo District Council could grant $90,000 to Taupo Bowling Club to be used for the construction of a synthetic bowling green. The grant is subject to community feedback via the 2008/09 Annual Plan submission process.

The Council had already pledged $40,000 to the bowling club which will be increased to $90,000 if the community agrees. The extra amount will help the club meet the total of $195,000 required for the new surface. The remaining funds are made up of external grants.

In return for Council’s financial assistance, the club will hand back one of its three bowling greens and its surroundings to Council which will enable the area to be opened up for public use.

The Chairman of Council’s Taupo/Kaingaroa-Mangakino/Pouakani Committee, Cr Kathryn Uvhagen, says making the land available to the wider community would be a great boost to the town centre. “Removing the fence which faces the lake and perhaps extending the gardens would make it an extremely pleasant area,” she says.

If the grant is made, it is expected to have a rates impact of 0.125 per cent.

Submissions on the Draft Annual Plan can be made verbally by phoning 0800 ASK TDC (080 275 832) as well as via the standard channels including written, faxed or online at www.taupo.govt.nz.  Submissions close at 5pm Monday, 21 April 2008.
