Fatal Crash in Whangarei

Police and emergency services are attending the scene of a fatal crash on SH1 at Mata, south of Whangarei.

At this stage it appears that a northbound MPV people mover has collided with a 4WD vehicle towing a caravan in the opposite direction.

One person is confirmed to have died at the scene and one other has received minor injuries.

The highway is expected to be closed for some hours as the scene is examined and cleared.

Initial diversions are in place using Salmon Road northbound and Springfield Road for southbound traffic.

This diversion uses gravel roads and motorists are asked to take care.

An alternative route for heavy traffic is being organised.

Diversions will be manned and sign-posted.

Serious Crash Unit staff will be investigating the crash.
