People will be starting to notice the new blue-lidded recycling wheelie bins as Auckland City Council’s distribution continues.

Approximately 50,000 blue-lidded recycling bins have been delivered to eligible properties in Onehunga, Otahuhu, Mt Wellington and Panmure so far.

City Development Committee chairperson, Councillor Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga, says the delivery of the new blue-lidded recycling bins to all eligible households is progressing on schedule.

“So far our crews have delivered just over a third of the scheduled 150,000 bins, which equates to nearly 3000 a day,” says Mr Lotu-Iiga.

“The rollout should take another nine weeks and will finish in time for the new recycling collection on Monday, 30 June.”

Residents are asked to remove the new bins from the footpath or kerbside to their property after receiving them and not to use them until then.

From 30 June, residents will use the 240-litre blue-lidded wheelie bins for recycling and the red-lidded wheelie bins for household waste.

Councillor Lotu-Iiga says there is plenty of public interest in the new recycling service, which has a goal of increasing recycling and reducing the amount of rubbish going to landfill.

“We really appreciate the cooperation and level of interest we are receiving from residents during this process. It proves that people want to participate in recycling and contribute towards a sustainable future.”

When the new recycling collection starts, residents can keep the blue recycling crate for personal use. Any unwanted crates will be collected in mid-July and the council will notify residents of the collection via City Scene public notices closer to the time.

In the meantime, residents are reminded that the blue recycling crates should be used for the recyclables collection until the new service starts on 30 June Any blue-lidded wheelie bins placed out before then will not be emptied

Regular updates in City Scene together with press and radio advertisements will advise residents of the rollout’s progress and the change-over to the new service.

Key facts

1. If residents have not received their bins (but neighbours have), contact the council one week later. If bins have not been delivered to the street, residents should wait until deliveries have occurred.

2. If residents do not receive an information pack with their bin, visit the council’s website to download a copy or call 379 2028.

3. The lids of some new recycling wheelie bins could be warped upon delivery. This is because of the way they have been transported and stored. If you close the lid, it will take a few weeks to reform into the correct position.
