Drink Drive Campaign, ANZAC weekend

 Auckland and Waitemata Police conducted a joint Drink Drive operation in Auckland City over the weekend.

Enforcement was targetted at a number of major arterial routes leading to the four metropolitan cities within the Auckland Region.

During the course of the operation Police stopped 11,455 vehicles and identified 119 persons driving with excess breath or blood alcohol levels.

All these drivers now face prosecution in relation to these charges.

Of concern is the fact that despite a lengthy and well publicised education campaign and enforcement, there remains a consistently unacceptable number of people who continue to drink and drive.

Of those stopped by Police some 29 drivers exceeded the legal limit to the degree that required mandatory suspension of their drivers licences and a further 12 drivers had their motor vehicles impounded as they were either disqualified from driving or had been previously forbidden from driving.

An analysis of the results revealed 21 drivers were en route to home addresses in the Waitemata District while a further 38 drivers were returning to Manukau City and environs.

Police will therefore continue to conduct Drink Drive operations in Metropolitan Auckland to identify and remove intoxicated drivers from the road.
