Night Flyers: RNZAF to conduct night flying exercise
Up to four Royal New Zealand Air Force Iroquois helicopters from Number 3 Squadron will take part in night flying exercises around the Wanganui, Waiouru, Manawatu, Horowhenua and Wellington regions from 12 – 16 May.
Exercise Pekapeka - the Maori name for a native nocturnal bat that operates in the dark - will train RNZAF helicopter crews in the use of Night Vision Goggles (NVG). A number of missions will be flown each night.
The exercise is designed to train the aircrew in various NVG operations including army and police support and counter terrorist scenarios, as well as night cycle operations for maintenance personnel.
While the RNZAF attempts to minimise disruption due to noise, the nature of the training requires flying in built-up areas. Members of the public are advised that helicopters may be heard during these night flights.
The RNZAF wishes to acknowledge the communities in which the exercise will occur for their patience and support.
