WELLINGTON

The results from a drink drive blitz in Wellington overnight has Police hopeful that the drink drive message is finally getting through.

Over 1,500 vehicles were stopped and drivers breath tested.

Nine face drink drive charges.

A similar operation six months ago in the same location netted 27 drink drivers from a similar number of vehicles stopped.

Collections Staff and the Commercial Vehicles Investigation Unit were also present. 16 vehicles were impounded for fine payment defaults and driving offences.

One driver was caught travelling 154km/hr in a 100km/hr area approaching the checkpoint.

Another stopped short of the checkpoint and reversed back up the road into oncoming traffic.

Overall Police are very pleased with the drink drive results and the opportunity to work closely with our road safety partners.
