The newly renovated Turangi Library is due for completion in early June with the official opening scheduled for late June.

Once the renovation work is finished, library staff will move back into the building from their temporary location and begin arranging the library’s thousands of books and resources.

Stunning etches on the building’s windows by Ngati Tuwharetoa artist Te Maari Gardiner will be a dramatic feature and tiles salvaged from the old library prior to the renovations are being re-used in a landscape design which will be used in a location agreed on by the Friends of the Library.

Unfortunately, the library renovation project has encountered a few difficulties resulting in time and cost over-runs. However, Turangi/Tongariro Community Board Chairman, Don Ormsby says the community should be very pleased with the final results.

“The community can look forward to using a modernised, updated library,” says Councillor Ormsby.

Turangi Library Manager Elizabeth Hura-O’Connor says the new library will be extending its children’s programmes. With the assistance of funding from Genesis Energy, there will be a weekly preschool programme throughout the year and a reading programme held during the Christmas holidays.
