Work Soon to Start on Huatoki Development
The public area alongside Huatoki Stream in central New Plymouth is about to be reshaped, with construction due to start early next month.
The new-look area will include an amphitheatre alongside the stream, a canopy with dome skylights at the Devon St entrance, a new footbridge, trees and feature lighting.
Workers are scheduled to move on-site on 9 June and finish the project by Christmas.
“James Lane will remain open for service vehicles to the adjacent businesses, but the rest of the area between Devon and Ariki streets will be closed to the public during construction,” says Manager Projects Team Jeff Bondy.
“The design will create a link between the Devon St retail area and Puke Ariki Landing, but will have a completely different feel to the landing.
“By using hard surfacing throughout, the area will be able to be used in all weather as well as for events such as market days.”
The $1.676 million construction contract cost was included in the Community Plan 2006-2016, while the final design was shaped by public feedback received on early concept drawings.
