On the 23rd of May 2008 at approximately 11.20am emergency services were called to Lake Poerua, South of Lake Brunner near Greymouth.

Two men had overturned their kayak with only one making it back to shore.

A search was conducted for the missing man who was last seen having difficulty staying afloat.

The local Lake Brunner Coast Guard were dispatched and were supported by members of the Greymouth Coast Guard and Greymouth Surf Rescue Unit.

The Solid Energy Rescue Helicopter with rescue swimmer was also called to the scene.

Unfortunately a thorough search of the Lake failed to locate the man who is believed to have drowned.

The Police National Dive Squad has been called in from Wellington and will commence a search of the lake tomorrow.
