The newly renovated Turangi Library will be officially opened on Monday 30 June. Ngti Turangitukua will formally welcome guests before the MP for Taupo, Honourable Mark Burton, unveils a plaque to officially open the building.

The new building will feature a number of unique and original elements including stunning etches on the windows by Ngati Tuwharetoa artist Te Maari Gardiner. As well as this, Council officers are working with the Friends of the Library and other interested parties to find an appropriate home for tiles removed from the outside of the previous building. It is recognised that these have great significance and a place befitting this is currently being identified.

Turangi/Tongariro Community Board Chairman, Don Ormsby says the community should be very pleased with the final results.

The Library Manager, Elizabeth Hura-O’Connor, says the new library will be extending its children’s programmes. With the assistance of funding from Genesis Energy, there will be a weekly preschool programme throughout the year and a reading programme held during the Christmas holidays.

The library will resume its normal opening hours from Tuesday 1 July onwards.
