With another front scheduled overnight, people travelling in the Lakes District are being reminded to carry chains and be prepared for snow to low levels, Queenstown Lakes District Council emergency management officer Brenden Winder said.

Snow was expected from later this evening, overnight, and through tomorrow, eventually easing later on Tuesday.

“During this period ‘significant snow’ is forecast to 200m with the heaviest falls being in the south and east of the region,” Mr Winder said.

QLDC roading contractor, Downer EDI Works would monitor the situation from 3 am tomorrow morning.

Downer would deploy grit trucks and snow ploughs as needed during the night.

"Additional resources will be called if required but we are hoping that will not be necessary," Mr Winder said.

The front was another reminder that it was definitely time to throw the chains in the back of the car and that winter driving would apply," Mr Winder said.

Any road closures, school notices or delays or changes to bus timetables would be broadcast on local radio stations from around 7am.
