BAY OF PLENTY

Motorists diverted along the western side of the Kaimai ranges south of Paeroa due to a crash in the Waikino Gorge have the opportunity to inspect some of the more spectacular heritage restoration work being undertaken by the Department of Conservation.
The former Waiorongomai gold mining site just south of Te Aroha features a partly-restored bush tramway rail incline, along with a fully rebuilt headstock which was used to haul ore wagons up and down the area's steep slopes.
Further along the road towards the SH29 junction over the Kaimai ranges, the stunning Wairere Falls present themselves as a stunning stop-off for a few minutes' rest and invigoration before continuing safely on their journey. The falls can be seen from the Te Aroha-Okauia Road and are signposted from the Goodwin Road turnoff.
Details of both sites can be found in the Bay of Plenty section of the www.doc.govt.nz website.
