NELSON

The 37 year old man who appeared in the Nelson District Court this morning on a charge of assault, has been remanded in custody without plea to the 15th July, with interim name suppression.

The mother of the child remains in the care of the Women's Refuge, and has spent today being re-interviewed by police.

Detective Inspector John Winter said the Post-Mortem examination was completed this evening, and the results will be discussed tomorrow with the Crown Solicitor and the Coroner. No comment will be made to the media on the findings. A decision on any other charges will be made after due consideration of the evidence.

The scene examination has been halted for the night, and will resume tomorrow morning. It is expected to be completed by tomorrow evening.

Enquiries with other government agencies and NGO's in Nelson and South Auckland continue. The natural father of the deceased was located and advised today.

No date has yet been set for the funeral.
