WELLINGTON

Police are warning motorists of surface flooding in Paekakariki, which is causing significant delays to motorists.

The southbound lane through Paekakariki is currently under water - with motorists reporting that the water is close to the bottom of the doors of vehicles in some places.

To compound this, the Metservice is warning of a sustained rain and thunder storm currently descending on Wellington City. The storm is expected to bring heavy rain and thunder to the city, which will impact on road and traffic safety.

Police are urging motorists to delay non-essential travel where possible or consider using public transport - and to watch following distances.
